For heavy-duty work, you need a heavy-duty responsive keyboard that gears up your working ability in hottest FPS games or writing 25 pages lengthy article.

For this purpose, a mechanical keyboard is considered a durable and comfortable keyboard compared to a rubber dome standard keyboard. The mechanical keyboard uses different MX switches. 1. Cherry MX Board 1.0 Best Under $100

Cherry MX Board 1.0 Best Under $100

Cherry is famous for making the most popular brand of mechanical switches for gaming keyboards: the Cherry MX line. However, it also turns its hand making whole keyboards, such as this the Cherry MX Board 1.0. Perhaps surprisingly, while the company’s high-quality switches are revered for their premium build quality, the MX Board 1.0 is a budget keyboard that costs under $100 dollars inc VAT, making it one of the cheapest full-size keyboards with true Cherry MX switches.

The construction is all plastic, and the basic appearance isn’t helped by Cherry also opting for a particularly utilitarian grey plastic for the under side. The modest attempt to elevate the appearance by having an angled border around the keyboard, with each of the corners chamfered and left with a shiny finish, doesn’t really work for our eyes either. The same also goes for the included very long, solid plastic wrist rest with its enormous MX logo.

Moving on to more practical considerations, that plastic build makes for quite a flexible unit. You don’t notice it flexing when the keyboard is laid flat, bit if you raise it upon its flip-down rear feet, it can flex a little in the middle. Moreover, those feet aren’t very stable, tending to fold in on themselves if you slide the MX Board sideways. Meanwhile, the cable is tethered, rather than removable, and measures 1.8m long. It has a plain rubberised finish.

There aren’t many extra features either, with no USB pass-through for instance. There are just four extra keys in the top right area, above the numpad. These consist of a Cherry button that turns off the Windows key and three media playback buttons. There are also secondary functions available, via combinations of the Fn key and the F row. There’s a Mute and Volume control, and you can adjust the brightness of the white LED backlight.

The legends on the keys have a slightly stylized font that has gaps in some of the letters. However, it’s fairly subtle and the legends remain clear and easy to read. The backlighting works well too and offers a very granular level of brightness adjustment, letting you dial in just the right setting. The brightness is plentiful too.

In fact, it can be too plentiful, as the Windows key and Lock keys remain at full brightness, even when the rest of the backlighting has been turned down, and they can be really distracting. You can turn off the Windows key by hitting the Cherry button, but this completely disables the key. Likewise, you can turn off the Lock keys, but that’s not very useful if you tend to leave Num Lock on all the time, for example.

So far, the MX Board 1.0 hasn’t exactly wowed us, but thankfully the MX Board 1.0 has it where it counts, which is typing action. Equipped with Cherry’s venerable MX Brown switches, the typing experience here is excellent.

The key action strikes the perfect balance of being light enough to not be a strain, but with just enough spring and depth that you seldom risk a misfire. The tactile bump that occurs before the switch bottoms out, and in time with the activation of the switch’s contact, helps to prevent you from pressing too hard as well.

Summary

For such a venerated company as Cherry, the basic design and build of the MX Board 1.0 is a little disappointing. However, with the fantastic typing experience of Cherry MX switches, this board is a solid word smith’s tool for a great price. It’s just a shame about the weird backlighting brightness on the Windows and Lock keys.

Fantastic typing action for a good price, but there’s room for improvement in the design.
