1. Beats Powerbeats Pro Noise Cancelling Earphone Review

Powerbeats Pro Wireless Earphones – Apple H1 Headphone Chip

BEATS IS OWNED by Apple and the tech giant’s ability to produce cleverly designed but easy-to-use electronics is much in evidence here.

The Beats range has always had superb sound quality and that continues with the Powerbeats Pro.

The fit is comfortable and secure enough to keep t he buds in place through all kinds of runs and workouts.

But it’s some smart new ideas that elevate them – they charge in their case (the phones click in magnetically), meaning there’s no port for a power lead on the phones .

There are volume and music controls on both earbuds, for convenience, while the sound cuts out automatically when you remove one from your ear (and restarts when you put it back in).

In short, the Powerbeats Pro are outstanding activity earphones, albeit for a premium price.

2. Jaybird Vista True Wireless Bluetooth Sport Waterproof Earbud

Jaybird Vista True Wireless Bluetooth Sport Waterproof Earbud

A BIT OF A CURATE’S EGG, these. Let’s get the less impressive stuff out of the way first. The fit was secure but we just couldn’t find a way of making it comfortable.

Having said t hat , we feel obliged to note that we couldn’t find any other reviewers who had this problem, so maybe it was our tester’s ‘unique’ ears.

In addition, the controls on the buds are quite fiddly on the run – this is, admittedly, a common issue with the present crop of true wireless earphones.

There’s plenty to like, though. The charging case gives one hour of power from only a five-minute stint, which is handy if you are in a rush (battery life is six hours on a full charge).

The build quality is unfussy but excellent; and fixing your personalized settings on the first-class accompanying app is a pleasingly uncomplicated experience.

3. Sennheiser CX SPORT – Sport Earbuds Bluetooth Headset

Sennheiser CX Sport Bluetooth Sports Headphone

I DON’T NEED the things to power the space shuttle, I just want something that doesn’t sound crap, is simple to use, will stay in my ears and doesn’t have to be handled with care.’

Does this sound like something you would say? If so, the CX Sport earphones are for you. There aren’t many bells and whistles, but the sound is warm, deep and crystal clear.

The neck cable is pleasingly flexible (there is a cable organizer that allows you to tailor it to suit) and the control pad and in-line mic aren’t so heavy that they drag on the earphones, pulling them out, which can happen with some other brands.

The CX Sport can also be quick-charged in 10 minutes for an hour of play. These are perhaps a touch pricey for what you get, but we think they will see you right for a long time.

4. Plantronics 211856-99 Backbeat Fit 3100 True Wireless Earbuds, Sweatproof and Waterproof

Plantronics 211856-99 Backbeat Fit 3100 True Wireless Earbuds, Sweatproof and Waterproof

PLANTRONICS IS BEST known for making wireless headphones for the office, but this model is designed for runners.

With wrap-around ear hooks and one-size-sort-of-fits-all silicone tips, the BackBeat Fit 3100 buds stay securely in place while allowing the wearer to hear ambient noise.

From an audio-quality perspective, this lack of noise isolation is a negative. But from a running perspective, it’s a good thing: you can wear these and remain aware of cars, bikes and pedestrians.

These are also water-resistant; you can even wear them in the pool, should that take your fancy.

Bluetooth-enabled, they pair quickly, while tracks can be paused and skipped by pressing down on the right bud, and the volume adjusted by pressing down on the left.

If you’re more athlete than audiophile, press play on these.

5. Urbanears Stadion in-Ear Active Wireless Bluetooth Headset

Urbanears Stadion in-Ear Active Wireless Bluetooth Headset

THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE about these is the unusual coil design of the wires. They stretch to fit your head and then sit there snugly, with no irritating f lapping on the back of your neck.

On-ear fit is secure and there are three buttons on the back of the bar that are extremely easy to locate and use for play/pause/skip/volume control.

There is no noise cancellation, which is a good safety aspect on the run, as you’ll hear background noises.

The sound quality is decent, but not a ma zing ; however, our view is t hat t h is is a secondary issue on sports headphones, and the comfort and ease of functionality more than make up for this.

They’re about $20 too expensive for what they provide in comparison with other brands, but think of the extra cash as a premium for convenience. A thoroughly competent, hassle-free delight.

6. Libratone Track Air+ True Wireless Active Noise Cancelling Earbuds

Libratone Track Air+ True Wireless Active Noise Cancelling Earbuds

WE THINK MOST runners would consider these buds – which are shaped like tiny samosas – to be on the upper end of the style scale for earphones.

They’re also durable, lightweight and, though not completely waterproof, they will withstand plenty of sweat and any moderate downpours you get caught in.

There’s an accompanying app for sound customization, and the noise-cancelling facility can easily be turned on or off, as well as adjusted to one of a few middle-ground settings.

The Air+ lasted just shy of six hours with noise-cancelling active, so you will get about 24 hours of playback when you use the small charging case, which provides up to three additional full charges.

However, the lack of volume control on the buds is a disappointment on such a high-end product.

7. AKG N200 Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds

THESE ARE WATERPROOF earbuds designed to get you through those sweaty sessions. It takes less than 30 seconds to put them in, connect to Bluetooth and hit the music – even on first use.

And with an eight-hour battery life, they’ll only need charging every few uses. A nice touch is the speed-charge feature, which will give you an hour’s worth of power in just 15 minutes.

They come with three sizes of silicone hooks and four sizes of buds so that, after some experimentation, you can find the right combination for a perfect fit.

Sound quality is adequate, but a little on the tinny side, so if lack of a booming bass to rattle your brain is a deal-breaker for you, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

The reflective cable is another nice feature, helping to ensure you can be seen in low light.

8. AfterShokz Aeropex Open-Ear Wireless Bone Conduction Headphones with Sport Belt

AfterShokz Aeropex Open-Ear Wireless Bone Conduction Headphones with Sport Belt

WHAT SETS THESE apart is the bone-conduction technology, which sends audio vibrations through your cheekbones to your inner ears, bypassing your lugholes.

This is great from a safety perspective and comes with surprisingly little compromise on sound quality, which is excellent.

There’s also a comfort bonus – you don’t have to ram and twist them into your ears as you do with some buds.

Battery life is solid (roughly eight hours of playback), while a nano protective coating and watertight rubber gaskets make them fully sweatproof and waterproof.

Playback and calls are easily controlled by a single multi-function button. On the downside, our tester found the rocker switch that controls power and volume rather fiddly and had to resort to using their phone midrun. All in all, though, an excellent package.

9. Urbanista Chicago Bluetooth Sports Earphones [ HIGH Performance ]

Urbanista Chicago Bluetooth Sports Earphones [ HIGH Performance ]

THE SINGLE BIGGEST annoyance we have found with earphones is their tendency to fall out on the run or in the gym, either because of sweat or the constant jostling when you’re on the treadmill.

These stay firmly put, so they get a big tick even before we factored in the rich sound, which can be enjoyed in isolation or with awareness of your surroundings, depending on which buds you fit.

The control panel is small and unobtrusive, and changing/pausing songs and adjusting volume is a cinch, as is answering calls.

Bluetooth connectivity is fast and strong, and you get a generous seven hours of power from one charge.

A final neat touch is that the buds are magnetized, so they can be stuck together and hung safely around your neck when they are not in use.

10. mifo O5 Plus True Wireless Earbuds Upgrade, TWS Bluetooth 5.0 Headphones

mifo O5 Plus True Wireless Earbuds Upgrade, TWS Bluetooth 5.0 Headphones

THE REMARKABLE SOUND quality was the standout feature here – every use is like being in a concert hall.

And the excellent noise cancelling totally blocked out the awful, thumpy gym music when we cross trained: such bliss.

Set-up is idiot-proof, with minimalist, Apple-style instructions, so they are perfect for the technically challenged.

Functionality is where these need to be improved: the buttons are ludicrously small, so if you have bigger fingers, you’ll find making a track or volume change on the run a bit of a pain.

But the battery life (more than 100 hours if you use the charging case) is superb, the durability is good, they’re waterproof and the overall look and feel are premium.

If button functionality had been better, we’d have scored these even higher.
